When Westchester teens run away from home or otherwise become homeless, The Children’s Village’s Sanctuary is often the only thing between them and frightening and dangerous nights on the streets. Sanctuary is the only shelter for youth in the County, and has been operated since 1984 by The Children's Village. The program was expanded in 2003 from a capacity of 12 to 14, but still has a waiting list at some times of the year. Youth 12 to 17 access the shelter 24 hours a day by calling a hotline, being referred by police, guidance counselors or other professionals, or just showing up on the doorstep. Sanctuary is a short-term program and, barring unusual circumstances, youth may stay for only 30 days or less.
